HEARTS THAT BREAK THE NIGHT IN TWO

October 14, 2010

Here’s a dark little collaboration of Bedouin Soundclash and our favorite French-Canadian songstress Coeur de Pirate, entitled “Brutal Hearts.” The song has a very Lykke Li or The xx feel to it, which is just perfect for a rainy morning here in the Nation’s Capital. It also features Beatrice Martin singing in English, which helps me understand what’s going on in the song (unlike other Coeur de Pirate tracks)

ALL THINGS GO GOODBYE SUMMER MIXTAPE

September 8, 2010

It’s been a while since I delivered a mixtape to you loyal readers. The first edition of the Workout mix debuted way back in early June with the second half due out mere weeks after, but despite having the mixtape prepped and ready to go for y’all, I’ve basically been a lazy writer. For those of your waiting to get your sweat on, hold out a few weeks longer, and your wish will be granted. For those of you, however, looking to cling to that last little bit of Summer, look no further than the Goodbye Summer Mixtape. My 15 song opus features the usual suspects from the likes of Yeasayer, The Temper Trap, and Belle & Sebastian, but also features some newcomers (CSLSX, Oberhofer) and some dynamic remixes from relative unknowns like George Raquet and Big City Love Affair. As usual, the tracks are available individually and as a .zip file below. We like to make it easy for you.

Cling on to that last little glimmer of Summer. The days get shorter from here on out.

Cause I’m Not Who I Used to Be

June 11, 2010

Bachelors of Science are two DJ’s from the Bay Area that are out to show audiences that Drum n Bass isn’t “all harsh banging booom tshh,” but can actually be soulful and worth sitting down to listen to. The duo just released their fourth offering, Warehouse Dayz, but recently they’ve been getting more attention for their clever remixes. Their take on The XX’s “Infinity” keeps the minimal vibe going, but varies the rhythm and keeps it more focused. My favorite BoS offering, though, has to be their genius remix of “Brothers on a Hotel Bed” by Death Cab for Cutie. The shimmery vocals, clean drums, and all-around dreamy feel turns a gem of a song into, well, a more polished gem. Listen for yourself, and head over to the band’s website to download Warehouse Dayz.

All Things Go Workout Mixtape Disc 1

June 3, 2010

I know that many of you were waiting for the ATG May Mixtape, but instead of making a monthly mix, I’ve been cooking up a few more themed mixes for your enjoyment over the next few weeks. The first of these is the ATG Workout Mixtape Disc 1. Disc 2 is set to drop a few weeks from now, in case you get tired of this bad boy while you’re pushing it on the treadmill.

I know that my music tastes change drastically when it comes to workout music. I need something with bass, a catchy hook, and a jam with no lulls. That being said, I still enjoy the bands I always have, and thus remixes are the best compromise. Ten of the 15 jams on this mix are remixes, and each and every track was handpicked to give you the biggest boost you need to finish that workout. You’ve got indie-rock remixes (The XX, Temper Trap), Straight house (Duck Sauce, Surkin), Hip hop remixes (KiD CuDi, A-Trak, Ludacris) and just an all-around mega-jam in “Crysteena.” By the final track, Crystal Castles “Magic Spells,” you should be completely spent. Pop on this one hour and twelve minute rump-shaker and I guarantee that the ATG Workout Mixtape is, in the words of the legendary C & C Music Factory, “gonna make you sweat.”
