SHE’S A WASPY GIRL

September 30, 2010

Holy samples Batman! I know indie folk/rock samples are en vogue (see: Chiddy Bang, Hoodie Allen, Gilbere Forte), but this one might just take the cake. Newcomer G-Eazy provides some decent lyrics to an incredibly well-crafted sample of Tennis’ absolutely adorable “Marathon.” The song, about a clueless waspy girl, absolutely bangs. I promise you wont be let down.

IF I WAS RICHER, I’D STILL BE WITH YA

September 10, 2010

Cee-Lo’s “Fuck You” has been blasting on the stereos of every ATG writer for the past few weeks, and since you’d literally have to have never encountered this series of tubes we call the internets to miss it, we opted not to post it. We will, however, post the inevitable Chiddy Bang remix of said uber-mecha-saiyen-epic-barbrastresand jam, entitled “The Fuck You (Remix).” In typical fashion, Chiddy raps over a Xaphoon Jones crafted sample of a popular indie track (see: “Kids,” “All Things Go,” “Under the Sheets,” etc.). The result is, predictably, awesome.

I’M A SPHERE THEY A SQUARE THEY CAN’T EVEN COME AROUND

September 2, 2010

Love him or hate him, Wale is basically the only hope D.C. hip hop has to make a mark on the national scene. So yeah, his debut LP was a big disappointment. Yeah, he’s somewhat unwilling to accept some blame for his album’s failure (you’d understand if you follow his twitter). Most of his mixtapes, though, have always allowed Wale to display his true colors. Unquestionable talent oozes from every clever turn of phrase and imaginative verse. No recent track demonstrates this better than his freestyle over Gyptian’s “Hold Yuh.” From cheeky pop culture references to confident bravado, it gets me excited to see Wale remember how he built a cult following, and play to that. Yeah, Wale’s always been egotistical, but on “Hold Yuh,” he’s the good kind, the rapper kind, not the ‘it’s not my fault my album was a flop’ kind.

WHEN YOU’RE TOUCHING ME IT TAKES IT ALL AWAY

August 30, 2010

Put me into the category of people who had become a bit bored with the same drab, predictable plot lines in Entourage. Eric has nothing going on that’s worth putting on film, Johnny is borderline annoying, and Turtle couldn’t begin to dream about sleeping with this. One thing the show always had going for it, though, was its taste in music. The producers always seem to be on the cutting edge with solid music placement, from blasting Gnarls Barkley’s “Gone Daddy Gone” on the way to Vegas to M.I.A.’s “Space” as Vince skydives for the first time). Last night’s episode, which was tension-filled as usual, ended with a song that instantly struck me as familiar. I hopped on the series of tubes and found out that the song was put together by none other than Nas and Damian Marley, entitled “Patience.” The song, off the duo’s new collaboration Distant Relatives, is halfway decent, but the sample is what really caught my ear. I knew, again, that I had heard it before. Back to the tubes I went, and discovered that it was “Sabali,” the gorgeous song from Amadou & Mariam. Still, that didn’t satisfy my thirst. I scoured my iTunes for about twenty minutes before it finally clicked. THEO. LONDON. GREY. X. SAGE.

It was like an orgasm except this time the girl didn’t laugh and ask if that was it it was in song form. Enjoy both the Nas/Damian version, as well as Theo’s retake.

You Came to Take Us, All Things Go, All Things Go

So, as many of you know, this site gets its name from quite possibly the most epically beautiful song of all time; Sufjan Stevens’ “Chicago.” While Sufjan himself has remixed his own masterpiece (see: Easy Listening Version, Acoustic Version, etc.), nothing truly held a candle to the original. That still holds true, but we can’t blame others for trying. You may wonder where I am going with this, so I’ll cut to the chase: Chiddy Bang is starting to build a rep for tackling some of the most interesting indie jams, sampling Passion Pit’s “Better Things” and MGMT’s “Kids” (chronicled here). The group just kicked it up a level with their newest jam, you guessed it…”All Things Go.”

Ok, so the rapping is not top notch. IT’S FUCKING SUFJAN STEVENS IN A RAP SONG. GO. LISTEN. NOW!
