WE REQUIRE CERTAIN SKILLS

October 13, 2010

For those of you who think we’re just becoming a Chiddy Bang fanblog….well, you’re kind of right. But after Chiddy and Xaphoon keep dropping flawless remixes of Cee-Lo, Darwin Deez, Ellie Goulding, etc., can you really blame us? The latest gem is their reworking of The Naked & Famous’ “Young Blood,” which seamlessly works the original vocals and 8-bit sounding synths in with Chiddy’s trademark pop-culture riddled verses.

As an added bonus, check out Chiddy and Theodore Grams freestyle over the adorably hateful “Bad Day,” marking the third time Xaphoon Jones has remixed Darwin Deez.

We Could Be Up in the Clouds

June 21, 2010

Last time we checked in with Darwin Deez, he was rockin’ Adrian’s eardrums at Great Escape in Brighton, and before that he made a sweet little appearance on the most recent Valentine’s Day Mixtape. Needless to say, he’s well liked ’round these parts. More recently, however, the man’s been getting notoriety due to some timely remixes of singles off of his self-titled debut by the likes of Xaphoon Jones (of Chiddy Bang fame) as well as Mr. Flash. The well-known Ed Banger crew member chimed in with a retake on “Up in the Clouds,” giving the song a face lift with a trademark Ed Banger-esque synth drum and what sound like horns, but I can’t really tell. Regardless, “Up in the Clouds” is worth snatching so, you know…snatch it?

What Planet Are We On?

May 27, 2010

Most of you already know about Darwin Deez by now, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the man here after catching him at Great Escape in Brighton a couple of weeks ago.  Some say his music falls victim to repetition, but Deez pulled off his set of quirky indie-pop jams with enough charm and flair (see: ridiculous 80’s music dance interludes) to make that a non-issue.  Get hooked on the Deez by checking out “Bad Day” and the Xaphoon Jones remix of “Radar Detector” (listen to the original on our last Valentine’s Day Mixtape).

All Things Go Valentine’s Day Mixtape V

February 14, 2010

2010 has been an interesting year so far: A universal health care plan was proposed (then rejected), Conan was promoted (then unfairly booted), and my hometown was treated to the largest snowfall in its history. With all of the unexpected that 2010 has delivered, we can always count on Valentine’s Day arriving each and every February 14th, without fail. And with that, you can be certain that a new edition of the All Things Go Valentine’s Day Mixtape will be waiting here for you, all neatly wrapped in a .zip with album artwork and whatnot. Enjoy these ten bits of love, romance, and adoration on this beautiful day.

The mix starts with the almost unbearably cute “2 Atoms in a Molecule,” followed by “Radar Detector,” a bouncy number from one of my newer obsessions, Darwin Deez. Track three, “When You Walk in the Room,” is legitimately my favorite song of 2009. I implore you to get that chorus out of your head. Next up is Discovery’s take on Ra Ra Riot’s “Can You Tell,” a reggae-synth driven doozy of a love song. Drake takes the mix in a different direction with his sexed up “Best I Ever Had,” which segues not nicely at all into Ingrid Michaelson’s “The Way I Am.” The Knife’s classic “Heartbeats” clocks in at number seven after Jose Gonzalez’s acoustic version appeared on the first edition of the Valentine’s Day Mix. The ultra-talented boys from Versailles give us the aptly titled “Girlfriend,” followed by Passion Pit’s absolute masterpiece, “Moth’s Wings.” I recently heard the song during the wedding scene in a new episode of HBO’s “Big Love,” and only then did I truly appreciate its beautiful message. The mix is wrapped up by an Eric Clapton classic, “She’s Waiting,” a song whose message contradicts the spirit of February 14th, but is dedicated to a very special person in my life.
