New Found Glory – Coming Home

I know, New Found Glory – it’s about as pop-punk as you can get. But wait, hear me out! New Found Glory rose to stardom when Blink 182’s Enema of the State threw pop-punk into the mainstream. Their early material (Nothing Gold Can Stay, New Found Glory) was some of the most cookie-cutter pop-punk music that had ever been heard. And people ate it all up – I know I did. NFG became masters of their craft, churning out catchy hook and chorus lines. And while some compared Jordan Pundik’s overly-nasal voice to be nails on a chalkboard, the majority of kids out there loved it. Blink 182 was mostly reponsible for popular acceptance of the genre, but NFG served as a template for the hundreds of half-ass pop-punk bands that managed to snag record deals by riding on the coattails of others’ success.

This time around NFG completelys shake off their pop-punk tags and dons a new sound. New Found Glory’s Coming Home moves away from the upbeat tone that made them famous to one that’s more somber and melodic. Think of it this way – as New Found Glory may have been the ideal album for a summer on the beach, Coming Home serves as more of a fall album, a reminder and return to the more serious side of life. Yet despite this departure of sound, the band is still catchy as ever (the gang vocals in the chorus of the title track are to die for). And even though NFG may have taken it down a notch or two in cheeriness, there are plenty of upbeat songs. Here are some standout tracks from Coming Home
